Charette de la Contrie Susanne de Charette Van Stockum Collection 1586-2000.

This collection consists of papers of the de Charette family of France, which were inherited by Susanne de Charette Van Stockum. The collection is almost completely in French, and contains letters and accounts from the 18th and 19th centuries. The de Charette family include Francois-Athanase de Charette de la Contrie, a leader in the Vendee rebellion in 1796 and Athanase-Charles-Marie de Charette de la Contrie a hero of the Papal Zouaves and the battle of Loigny-Poupry, France 1870. The papers continue through the life of Tony de Charette who served in the French Army Tank Corps during the First World War and the Red Cross during World War II. Items of particular interest include a scrapbook kept by the General Baron de Charette during his tour of French Canada in the 1880's and the reunion of the Papal Zouaves at Basse Motte in the 1890's. Other items include letters from the Baron General's family in the late 1800's. There are also papers and letters from the late 18th and early 19th century dealing with the estate of the de Charette of Vendee fame and papers from Amy Brown.
